Arch. of Neurol. a. Psychiatr. Chicago, Vol. 5, pp. 231-283. postmortem production, in as much as nerve fibers are found in an abnormal substance which is not the swollen plasma of the axons. Initial Stage, Type B. (Observed in a case of acute delirium.) The observed alteration is in small zones or blocks in the white substance and not along the single fiber as in Type A. In sections of tissue, having been fixed in formalin then placed in nitric alcohol and stained with Ziver's solution, the small round or oval zones of altered white substance have a greenish blue color upon a base of yellowish blue; with the solution of Mann the color is red, while with toluidin blue it is rose-violet. In some fields other variations are noted. Some axons exhibit a variable amount of swellings and some areas are richly granular. In more advanced areas there are globoid zones, finely granular, and the remaining structure is unrecognizable. This same case presents the two types of changes, A and B, and the tissues present no metachromatic formation which has recently been described in cases of dementia praecox. Initial Stage, Type C. (Observed in a moderately severe case cf dementia praecox, case Gavazzi.) The changes to be noted in this brain tissue are found about the perivascular spaces.
